4 TIPS FOR DESIGNING A GREAT OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE

We’re back with more great tips from our experienced interior designers in Bend!

Of course, you know our Complements Home Interiors team already offers a wide range of interior design services in Central Oregon. But did you know that includes things like building an outdoor patio or kitchen?

It’s true! As the weather starts to heat up, we’re starting to discuss the process in more of our interior design consultation meetings. If you’re looking at expanding the entertaining space of your home, we can help. Let’s dive right into our best tips for designing a great outdoor living space.

TIP #1: DECIDE ON A PURPOSE

One of the first things we’ll discuss after you hire us to handle your outdoor living room design in Bend is the purpose of your space. While some people are more focused on creating an outdoor kitchen, others just want a place to gather around the fireplace with the family on a cold night. Be sure to take notes of the different options or upgrades that mean the most to you and what you want to accomplish by starting this project.

If you’re looking for ideas, here are several things to consider:

  • An outdoor kitchen with a grill, smoker, countertop for prep, and plenty of dining seating.

  • A comfortable outdoor living room with a chic outdoor rug, spacious sectional, and a pretty rock fireplace.

  • Several different small seating areas for individual conversation while entertaining guests.

  • A little nook with a small table and a koi pond for enjoying a relaxing moment or your morning cup of coffee.

TIP #2: DETERMINE WHAT YOU’RE WORKING WITH

The next step in designing a great outdoor living space is to decide what you’re working with. For example, looking at what way faces full sun exposure, whether you need to do additional dirt work to get an even slope, and any other technical elements. You’ll also want to pay attention to any patio structures that are already there and whether they need repairs.

TIP #3: CHOOSE A GOOD FOUNDATION

When creating an outdoor living space, choosing a good foundation is highly important. Not only will it be the surface for everything else you build, not having the right one can make your finished project less enjoyable for the family. Some of the most common options include a concrete slab, brick, or pavers.

TIP #4: GO FOR NATURAL ELEMENTS THAT CREATE AMBIANCE

Finally, you want to add natural elements in your design that create ambiance. Not sure what we mean? Well, a good fireplace or fire pit can be an excellent way to add the right amount of warmth and lighting. In contrast, a water feature such as a bubbling fountain or a pond can also create a serene space. Depending on your available space, you might even have room for both.
