PANTONE COLORS OF THE 2021 AND WHERE TO USE THEM IN YOUR HOME
We can all agree that 2020 was a tough year. To help commemorate the pandemic experience, Pantone has cheekily released a dual-tone set of shades as their 2021 Color of the Year: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.
Of course, we wouldn’t be your favorite interior design company in Bend if we didn’t at least post this information to our blog, right? That’s why we’ve put together this piece on Pantone Color Institute’s decision including what these colors are and why they were chosen.
WHAT IS THE PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR?
Essentially, the Pantone Color of the Year refers to a specific shade within the Pantone Color Matching System, which is a global directory of just about any shade of color possible. As a homeowner, this is the sort of thing your paint store uses a special software to refer to when you walk in with a pink pillow and want to match your walls exactly.
The final decision for the annual color pick is made by the Pantone Color Institute, which puts out a guide on their ideas for the trendiest hues for the coming year. It usually has some relation to the current state of the world or how society is feeling, which is the reason behind the dual tones for 2021.
WHY TWO SHADES FOR 2021?
According to the folks at Pantone, this year’s dual hue choice has to do with the fact that the global pandemic has left everyone feeling both distraught and hopeful. Ultimate Gray refers to the strife and stress we’ve all dealt with, while Illuminating is a sunny yellow that reminds us that better days are ahead.
While this might sound a little deep for just paint color picks, we feel that the additional meaning behind the idea is brilliant. After all, having hope for the future is important for everyone to embrace.
USING THESE COLORS IN INTERIOR DESIGN
There’s no doubt that Illuminating and Ultimate Gray couldn’t be farther apart in terms of what they represent and how they fit into a space. That said, even though there are two choices for the Pantone Color of the Year, that doesn’t mean you have to pair them together in a room.
For example, Ultimate Gray still fits in with the farmhouse trend that’s still super popular. But it could just as easily match with a blue or a teal versus the almost neon hue of Illuminating. However, in a super chic space like a modern bathroom, this bold yellow might be a fun option.
