Color creates a feeling.
When choosing wallpaper, a significant factor will be color. It’s the perfect way to add a punch of color to set the room’s mood. Soft cool hues imply serenity, but powerful cold colors are vibrant and dramatic. Warm colors—reds, yellows, oranges—deliver on their name by making people feel invited. These are popular in colder areas and look great in homes facing north—the more vibrant the hue, the more energy it will bring to a room.
Think about light.
In a north-facing room, dark hallway, or windowless area, search for wallcoverings that reflect light throughout the room, such as patterns with light hues and metallic or iridescent inks. Consider designs with flat surfaces, which reflect the most light. Dark shades can absorb light, making the space appear smaller.
Go big or go home.
We love the oversized large-scale designs that many vendors are creating these days. Why not a huge floral scene on the ceiling in a powder room? We say YES. Opting for large-scale designs is a bold move that will create visual interest. Of course, even smaller-scale designs can significantly impact your space. Go for that pastoral scene in your nursery! Why not put polka-dots in your kitchen? The beauty of wallpaper is that it can be removed easier than ever before.
Cover those flaws.
If you are covering up a flawed wall, think about a design that will hide the damage while adding fun and interesting details. Stripes and other vertical patterns draw attention to the height of a space. Vertical patterns, such as florals, may make that ceiling seem higher. Horizontal patterns will draw the eye to all corners of the room, making it appear larger. Textured prints can disguise or camouflage wall faults or architectural eyesores. Designs with genuine tactile surfaces include grass and string cloth, burlap, foil, expanded vinyl, and even fabric. Other papers mimic the appearance of marble, wood, leather, cloth, and even animal skins.
