4 LIGHTING DESIGN IDEAS FOR YOUR HOME

Not sure what type of lights to include as part of your home remodel? That’s okay! We’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn about several of our best lighting design ideas for your home.

WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF LIGHTING?

Before we can talk about the right types of lighting to use in specific rooms in your home, we need to have a quick primer on the three types out there. Ambient lighting is the general light you use to see in a dark room. Likewise, task lighting helps you concentrate on something specific, such as a table lamp in a reading nook or a great desk lamp in your study. And accent lighting is just that fun stuff that we add because it looks great–like toe-kick lighting or LED strips.

BEST TYPES OF LIGHTING BY ROOM

Now that we know the three different types of lighting, let’s look at the choices we have by room. Here are a few examples to consider.

  1. Kitchen Lighting: Illuminating your kitchen appropriately is important, as you’ll want to be able to see what you’re doing while cooking gourmet meals or just trying to measure the right amount of water for the coffee maker early in the morning. In this case, you’ll want bright ambient lighting, like built-in overhead lights. Small pendants over a center island work superbly as task lighting, while under counter mounts are a great way to enjoy the pizzazz of accent lights.

  2. Bathroom Lighting: Much like the kitchen, it is important that you’re able to see what you’re doing while getting ready for the day in the bathroom. A bright vanity light provides great ambient lighting, but built-in units could also work here, as well. You’ll also want specific task lighting around vanities or mirrors to make putting on makeup as natural as possible. And toe kick lighting or under sink units are definitely fun for master bathrooms as an accent.

  3. Bedroom & Living Room Lighting: These areas are a little bit different, as you generally have a specific purpose to be in them. Ambient lighting is a must, but really the important part is task lighting. A couple really good table lamps next to your sofa or bed often provide ample lighting for reading, watching television, or whatever else you feel like doing.

  4. Other Spaces: The type of lighting you utilize in other spaces largely has to do with the use. If you’re in a space that doesn’t get used all that often, a table lamp or some other form of task lighting is probably sufficient. But, if it is a dark area like a hallway or alcove where you’re usually traveling through the space without stopping, you’ll want to consider some form of fun task lighting to illuminate your path.
