We’re back with more tips on how to design a home you love. As a trusted interior design company in Bend, we thought it was important to create a blog post discussing one of the most overlooked aspects of a room–the window coverings.
When most people think about how they’re going to remodel or redecorate a space, they often forget about how they’ll cover up the windows. Instead, we’re going to dive right in and offer a few tips on the most popular options available right now. Here are our favorite trends in window treatments for 2021.
1. Roman Shades & Roller Shades
When it comes to flexibility in style and privacy, you can’t beat a Roman or roller shade. These designs are meant to provide excellent light blockage while exuding a clean, crisp aesthetic. Plus, they are easy to install and come in numerous color options.
Another reason why so many homeowners love these window treatments? You can pair them with sheer draperies for a look that doesn’t require dramatic curtains.
2. Plantation Shutters
While plantation shutters took a bit of a backseat in the popularity contest over the past few years, they’re back bigger than ever. Why? They’re easy to operate and more durable than other options, especially if you have kids and pets.
However, the availability of styles and materials has increased the popularity of plantation shutters, too. Where wood styles aren’t great for high-moisture areas like bathrooms, today’s new vinyl varieties easily hold up to temperature swings. And they’re also available in tons of neutral color options, like white and gray.
3. Luxe Draperies
While many of us are starting to emerge from our homes after such a long time being stuck indoors, there are still those who’ve opted to create a cozier look around the house. One way to do softly frame your windows is with luxe draperies on massive iron rods, which tend to add a more dramatic feel to the space.
But this doesn’t mean you’re limited to crushed velvet, Golden Girls-style florals, or something that looks like it came out of an old mansion. Just about any high-end fabric can be custom sewn to become a window covering.
The upside to this trend is that most styles come in either total or close to blackout styles. This means that the sun won’t be waking you or the kids up before you’re ready on a weekend morning.
4. Tech Options
In addition to the more traditional styles we’ve described above, new tech options are also available. These are motorized blinds that allow you to open and close them with a special smartphone app, which is highly convenient for most people.
In addition, some even connect to your favorite smart home device, making it easier than ever to set specific times for use. For example, you could set your Alexa or Google Home device to automatically open at the exact time of sunrise for your GPS location. Who knew modern blinds would be so intelligent?
